Research

My research program is mainly in the areas of urban and local campaigns and elections, city councils, and urban policy. I do not focus on any one city, although earlier in my career I completed a number of studies on Chicago and Los Angeles.

I have conducted research on election outcomes, dynamics of fundraising, campaign speech, and candidate emergence. My research in urban policy has focused on the effect of political versus institutional and contextual variables in explaining policy outputs. I am also interested in how city councils function as legislative institutions.

My most recent publications are “Women and Local Politics: How Different Offices Affect Female Candidacies,” Political Research Quarterly (November 2022), with John K. Wagner, and Understanding Urban Politics: Institutions, Representation, and Policies (Lanham, MD: Rowman and Littlefield Publishers, Inc. , 2020), with Arnold Fleischman.
